PostSubject: Gaming Events, clubs, tournaments [need opinion]   Wed May 20, 2009 2:20 pm

its been along time since i post.
recently i saw the banner " DOTA at one TJ"
then i realize, hey swinburne doesnt have a gamin club
so,
i was thinking, is it allowed to have an event like CS 1.6 , Dota, L4D, WOW, etc
game events held even though there is no club for it?

if can, Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
we can do some major events like those competition but its only inter faculty or student or basicaly
SWINBURNES only during the early sems when
all students just came, and has less work to do..
but notice on it will be posted earlier say like 1 -2 months, so that
teams or individuals can create a team or prepare themselves for it

well
what are your opinions swinburnians?

sorry if this is the wrong place. dun really know where to post out >.<
if i am wrong, pls move or delete this topic.

I'm not too sure whether the university allow such an activity in the campus. When I first came, I did hear such issues are not allowed but I don't know about now.

BTW, the notice at the cafeteria is gone, maybe got removed because the notice is not approved =S

You can go ask or submit a proposal about it to SSSC and see whether it gets approved or not.

Quite frankly, it's hard cause i've heard of ex-Swinburne student that had proposed to it and never happened according to the regulation of the uni itself.

OneTJ DotA? Be there to watch some great few teams(hint: sarawak teams are influential around malaysia atm online/offline tournament) play it all =) !

Gaming tournaments are more preferably organised by CC's as they had their license of operating it.
In University so far, only sports-related competition are more in need in my opinion. Another advise is having own's cyber cafe or sum sort to organise.

Or else, it'll be usually small scaled such as PS2/PS3/Wii type gaming tournament with 16 players to 24 players. More possible.

Come to think of it. Game titles are also a factor depending on the area/state/country your in. People plays game where more high level players pit themselves on the arena.

If the current trend is just on Counter Strike 1.6 , DotA , FIFA'09, CoD4, then it's a standard game title for tournament as seen. So other least popular game titles are just about suggestion.

yeps wat u said is true. that is why i thought
why is there a limitation to this section
for all we know games are also sports.

well seeing to what u have said,
i have a rough idea on how this would be,
but i dun think i can do it yet.
need to plan carefully and make some research.
i think our uni students are quite into games,
it doesnt matter whether one is good or poor
its just for relaxation and for the goodwill of sportsmanship i guess.

nvm nvm,
ill plan out and suggest it soon
hope it would work out. i think it will be a blast
since there are alot of gamers in Swinburnes

How are you going to attract the gamers? IMO most gamers here are not hardcore ones like DoTA addicts. We just finish a game and move on. We're only in events for the prize of otherwise busy days in uni.

We have to factor in materials and sponsorships especially for gaming PC's. It won't be fair competition if everyone uses his/her own PC.

That's why consoles are more of possibility. L.A.N. party is also a good one.

@admin. Why is L.A.N. without the dots banned?

it is for L.A.N. well i thought of getting to use our nearest cc.
gizmo.
but now its still in the suggestion and ideas collecting process.
for prize wise, it isn't that extravagant as WCG or ESWC or ACG which needs like thousands.
just in Uni.
where my frend's from local ipta's have ever done it before, they get to collect 1st prize for rm 500 + medals and trophy + tshirts . 2nd 300 + medals 3rd rm 200 + medals. 4th and 5th free t-shirts.
hmm well i am thinking where should i get the extra money from. cause when i calculate,
total hours spend for cc is about 400 already. i need another 1600 to cover the winning prizes, medals, trophies and tshirts.
well because of this matter i am still in the stage of planing dunno when ill submit my proposal.
plus, i open this thread to ask whether its legal to have such things or not only loled.

RetroMayday, censorship on the word "lan" has been removed. Terribly sorry for being really late in my moderating lately. I know, I'm a lousy moderator =(

vantilica, do you still stick to the idea of what you posted in the beginning, "inter faculty or student or basically SWINBURNES only" ? If you wanna implement the first criteria, inter faculty, it would be a difficult issue as player tends to stick with their own friends/teams regardless of which faculty they are from. If it's meant for Swinburne students only, it can be implemented by presenting student id upon registering.

No offence but base on what I read here, you can carry out your idea even without going through the management. I mean what is the whole point of going through them in the first place? You are not using the university's monetary or physical resources. The competition will be held at other place(cyber cafe) I doubt the staffs would like to join, I know there are some lecturers who play dota but only for fun purposes. You are not actually gonna make this event public. Well yeah, if they(the management) approve this, you may benefit from publicity like announcement through blackboard and such. However, considering the university's student population, how many students in that figure are the kind of people that would go for competition? Everywhere you go in the campus you can hear students(even girls) talking about dota heroes, ingame items, combo kills, etc etc, but who would wanna participate competitions? I believe there are, but not many. The most important factor here is that you are lack of capital to start with. Sponsorship is a good alternative but as they say, "No money No talk"

Previously there were students with similar interest as yours vantilica and they just carry out the competition at cyber cafe with the students by spreading the news through word of mouth. And it went nice, everybody had fun and such. Hope you can achieve on what you are trying do =)

Just my two cents.

@Lance, lousy or not, this forum is well maintained. Good job.

I sure the most common reason for not competing is the fear of competing against pros. I know I am.

In KL, maybe their management culture is more "flexible" bah yes, heard of it too. To held that, certain outside teams/player may had to be restricted though for preserving the levels of standard.

But still in the end goes back into Cyber Cafes issue naturally. You may just like promote the tourney by some agreement. It's like viral marketing whereas you inform your friends/nearby network of groups to certain contest/competition. I think this'll be a better possible task.

For me, I see official tournaments/contests as challenges thus I don't mind any opponents skills level assuming that they are part of the gaming network/rivals.

And then,
What some Sarawak gamers are partly for being kiasus. Overcome it. That's just what I see in it. Maybe big names , popular gamer may turn you down, that's where the very own's individual determination to make a good game lies within. Take it(end up with records) or leave it(end up failed) that sorta theory applies.

There are many gaming communities just residing in Sarawak excluding other states I've known.
Not just Swinburne having plentiful/ blast of gamers, INTI , SEGI , Cosmopoint , FTMS and just a few nick of colleges etc do have. And they do can be heard when you compete in certain organised tournaments such as CS or DotA.

Suggest,
You may even set up an inter-uni/college competition to bring up the heat. And again, in competition always a few man or team wins or get significant records :\ So that's some fact to be faced with as well..

A new RM500 graphics card sounds better than RM500 cash. Smile
That's the case for tech-heads like me. Maybe some contacts in IT shops?

Anyway, inter-varsity tournament is more a probability since there are more chances of grabbing sponsorships, participation, etc. You got to have a good management team too.

You have a point for tech-gamer. The cash might not be important for some players, it may be simply for peak of glory or team glory and bond made to achieve sumthing, plus its well-known if officials. So the cash could be either for donations or celebrating the wins and etc. That leads to their choices.

To mention 3d cards, yes if you compete in KL regions, winning team may get a chance to even obtain their very own 3d card as gift of winning. Etc radeon which I know of.

So it depends on how big/small scaled is the tournament held.

Not to mention budget. Say, a team of 6 or was it 5 (been a long long time since I dota-ed) win, and the prize have to be splitted, and I guess most organizers prefers to give out cash prize as it is easier to be split as well as lower down the cost instead of 1 person, 1 graphic card or any hardware. This brings up the issue of cost also unless big sponsors comes in like in the Peninsular Malaysia, where they are sponsored by big names like nVidia, ATI, Intel, AMD, Asus and so forth, as I have seen them in action.

You can't just look at the side of users/gamers alone but also on the organizer's side. If they cannot get the sponsorship, the prize will be lower as usual. Look at oneTJ's competition, the prize money was big, but was split between all the players.
