PostSubject: Preview of AMD's 45nm Phenom's (Deneb) Performance   Sun Aug 24, 2008 2:08 am

Been awhile since there's any breakthrough tech issues lately. Even the recent IDF didn't yield anything surprising except for 32nm and 22nm plans. Core i7 (previously codenamed Nehalem) and Atom powered devices are old news already.

Speaking of which, Intel's Core i7 CPU is going to be released in a few months (maybe in September?). AMD from time to time had stated that they're planning to release Deneb in Q4 2008 and they're on schedule. They seemed to be quiet about it though when they had a session with journalists near the IDF place (it's their intention Twisted Evil ). As expected from processing unit (GPU, CPU...) die shrink, power output, execution efficiency and functions should improve on the same architecture.

AMD 45nm Phenom first step review

Don't mind the weird title. It's a Taiwanese website in English. Their benchmarks should be close to what Deneb would performance on release. I sure hope things would get better when AMD moves Phenom to 45nm Hi-K process in Q1/Q2 2009. If they can offer Deneb cheap like what they did with the RV770 GPU, maybe I'll use it for my next rig. Razz

AMD will rule again!!

Deneb actually supports HyperTransport 3.1 which runs at 3.2GHz (52.1GB/s). That would be the same speed as Core i7's Quick Path Interconnect.

Alas, current generation Phenom runs the HT bus at 2.0GHz, not 2.6GHz (full speed) as previously thought. Apparently AMD had to lower the already high thermal output by reducing the speed of the memory controller Mad , thus significant reducing the performance. Hopefully Deneb's lower thermal envelope could run the HT bus at full speed.

I wish I understand half of what you just wrote... I feel sooo low tech... or what ever you guys call people like me.... "nuub"
Last time I was all AMD that is until my friend showed me a video on what happens when you take away the heat sink from an AMD and a Pentium CPU. It made me changed my mind

That video was like 7 years ago when AMD Athlons were the rage. I'm sure your friend was just messing with your mind (Is he an agent for Intel . Evil or Very Mad ). Things like that is impossible now.

Being an Intel fan, I do not diss AMD as I also support them due to the fact both processors have their pros and cons.

I sell PC and I recommend AMD for gamers and Intel for work. Thats how it is. Both processors are capable in their own field.

The heatsink story was very long already. Its due to the fact AMD couldn't survive due to no processor throttling, or called slowdown. Intel was ahead in this and their processor survive because of it. Think of a car with a good working brake and a car with the faulty one.

Kudos to AMD for their trials and tribulation, and the shift of ATI has brought alot of goodies to AMD.

Intel = The Empire
AMD = The Rebels
Athlon64 = A New Hope
Core 2 = Empire Strikes Back
Deneb & RV770 = Return of AMD

Twisted Evil
The Nanos are also prepping for rebellion in the ULPC front.
